4 Ways to Quickly Manage a Foreign Language in a Short Time

5/15/2014

Are you planning to visit another country? Or is your company sending you to oversee a new branch in another country? Whatever your reason for learning a new language is, it seems that you need to learn it as fast as you can. But wait, how can you learn a foreign language in just one month?

When it comes to learning a foreign language, many people would usually back out, believing that they will never be able to learn a foreign language in such a short period of time. But this is a misconception. In fact, there are some institutions that offer foreign language courses with a guarantee that you can learn a language in a few weeks. This sounds incredible but true, and what the institutions are referring to is basic conversations that will help you go around easily in a foreign country but not the kind of language learning intended for people who want to write long articles using a foreign language.  Anyone who wants to have a quick knowledge of a foreign language can easily do it in a matter of a few weeks to one month and here is how it can be achieved.

First, start with daily used expressions. You can find these very helpful words and phrases in booklets sold in many bookstores. There are also e-books that contain common expressions and greetings in different languages. Remember that when you visit another country, all the skills you need is to make yourself stay convenient and enjoyable by being understood in the places that you want to visit. Expressions used for polite greetings, asking for directions, inquiring about a certain person or place, or talking about the weather are useful and practical to learn. If you want to say these expressions with correct pronunciation and accent, you can make use of e-books because many of them include phonetic symbols for the words and phrases that you need to learn.

Second, practice using the language with someone who knows it. In some language learning centers, the instructors are native speakers of the language that they are teaching. Conversing with them using the language that you are learning is important. Don’t be afraid to try saying out some phrases or whole sentences. You will stumble at first but after several attempts, you will be able to manage a short exchange with others. If there's no native speaker around, at least you can find one on the internet. This will also give you an opportunity to practice the language that you are learning.

Third, learn new words as you go along and associate these words with images. This will help you memorize a new word better. Before you managed the language well, you already have a good collection of foreign words that you can understand and use. Many words have common roots although they have variants in other languages. Common roots are especially helpful when you are learning a European language such as Spanish, French, and Italian.

Fourth, when learning a new language, do not worry much about grammar. Memorizing grammar rules will not help you learn a language quickly. Later when you need to develop fluency in the foreign language that you are learning, you can spend time studying grammar rules.
